“LIGHTED COUPLE HOLDER SET FOR VEHICLES” Cross Reference to Related Order This order claims the benefit of US Provisional Order with Serial No. 61 / 300,260, filed on February 1, 2010, which is incorporated by reference in its entirety . Fundamentals of the Invention
1. Technical Field. This invention generally relates to cup holders or cup holders ("cup holders") for vehicles and, more particularly, to cup holders of vehicles illuminated with distributed light.
2. Related Technique. Vehicle cup holders are usually located near the driver and passenger seats in a convenient place to reach. During daylight, cup holders are easy to locate visually, so there is usually no problem finding and placing a cup in the holder. However, when the vehicle interior is dark, the cup holders can be difficult to see, so placing a cup on the holder can prove difficult. In an effort to remedy the problem of locating a cup holder inside a dark vehicle, lights were arranged on the cup holder to illuminate the cup holder, thus making it easier to view. The lights are provided as tubes of light, sometimes referred to as waveguides, to allow the light to be distributed to the cup holder via a remote light source. Typically, the light tube is a separate component disposed in the cup holder, and thus the component cost, handling costs and associated manufacturing cost are increased. In addition, there are problems with efforts to illuminate a cup holder evenly, and other problems exist with trying to keep the light source from being directly visible, particularly if the cup holder has regulators or cup adjusters. Cup adjusters are commonly used as solid, articulated pieces of opaque material that extend radially inwards towards the center of the cup holder to engage and place the cup in a stable position, while at the same time allowing the cup to be promptly removed from the cup holder. Although useful, cup adjusters have the aforementioned problem of preventing the cup holder from being uniformly illuminated, without the light source being in direct view, which is considered aesthetically undesirable. Summary of the Invention An illuminated cup holder assembly constructed in accordance with an aspect of the present invention facilitates the ability to see the cup holder inside a dark or dim or otherwise dark vehicle, while at the same time providing a holder -aesthetically pleasing cups and evenly lit.
The cup holder set includes a cup receptacle having an external annular wall configured to receive a cup.
At least one flexible and resilient finger extends radially inward from the outer wall, where the finger is configured to engage the cup to inhibit the cup from unwanted movement in the cup receptacle.
The finger has a translucent portion configured in communication with a light source to allow light to be emitted from the light source and through the translucent portion and into the cup receptacle.
According to another aspect of the invention, the finger has an opaque upper surface to prevent light from being emitted upwards from the translucent portion while allowing light to be emitted evenly downwards from the translucent portion to the cup holder .
In accordance with yet another aspect of the invention, the set of cup holders includes a plurality of fingers connected together by a body, and further includes a light tube adjacent to the body, in communication of light transmission with the light source.
Brief Description of the Drawings These and other aspects, features and advantages of the invention will become more easily appreciated when considered in connection with the following detailed description of the presently preferred embodiments and in a better way, with the attached claims and attached drawings, in which : Figure 1 is an exploded perspective view of a set of cup holders constructed in accordance with an aspect of the invention; Figure 2 is a top view of the cup holder assembly of Figure 1; Figure 3 is a cross-sectional view taken generally along line 3-3 of Figure 2; Figure 3A is a cross-sectional view taken generally along line 3A-3A of Figure 2 of a set of cup holders constructed in accordance with another aspect of the invention; Figure 4 is a flexible light transmitting cup adjuster for a set of cup holders constructed in accordance with another aspect of the invention; Figure 5 is a cross-sectional view similar to Figure 3 of a set of cup holders incorporating the cup adjuster of Figure 4; Figure 6 is a perspective view of a set of cup holders constructed in accordance with another aspect of the invention; Figure 7 is a cross-sectional view similar to that of Figure 3 of the cup holder assembly of Figure 6;
Figure 8 is an exploded perspective view of a flexible light transmitting cup adjuster of the cup holder assembly constructed in accordance with yet another aspect of the invention; and Figure 9 is a cross-sectional view similar to that of Figure 3 of the cup holder set in Figure 8. Detailed Description of Currently Preferred Embodiments Referring in more detail to the drawings, Figure 1 shows a perspective view of a set of cup holders 10 configured in accordance with a presently preferred aspect of the invention.
The cup holder set 10 includes at least one, and shown here, by way of example and without limitation, as a pair of interconnected cup receptacles, side-by-side 12. Each receptacle 12 has an external annular wall 14 configured to receive a glass (not shown). At least one flexible and resilient finger, and shown here as a plurality of fingers 16, extends radially inward from the outer wall 14. The fingers 16 are configured to engage the cup and to inhibit the cup from involuntary or unwanted movement while the cup is in the receptacle 12. The fingers 16 have a translucent portion 18 configured in light transmission communication with a light source, shown generically at 20, such that the light emitted from the light source 20 travels through and to out from the translucent portion 18 in the cup receptacle 12. The illumination provided by the fingers 16 is transmitted uniformly throughout the receptacle 12 such that an observer of the receptacle 12 sees a uniformly and aesthetically pleasing illuminated cup receptacle 12.
The pair of receptacles 12 is shown in the drawings, by way of example and without limitation, as being formed as a single monolithic piece of material, such as in a molding process, and thus, they are interconnected by an intermediate section 22. Each receptacle 12 has a top or top end 24 and a bottom or bottom end 26 with a support base 28 being formed at the bottom end 26 to support a bottom or bottom of the cup.
The receptacles 12 are shown to be generally cylindrical in shape, although other shapes are contemplated, such as rectangular, frustroconic, or other shapes.
The upper end 24 has a flat surface 30 extending over its periphery, with the flat surface 30 being shown as extending radially outwardly from the receptacles 12 and generally being as figure 8 or shaped into glasses.
In addition, a rim, also referred to as lip 32, extends upwards from the flat surface 30 over an outer periphery of the flat surface 30. The fingers 16 can be provided as discrete and separate components, formed separately from each other, or, as shown in Figure 1, they can be interconnected to each other as a single, monolithic body 34. Body 34 is constructed of resilient, light transmissive, flexible, translucent material, such as polyurethane or urethane material, for example .
The body 34 has an outer periphery 36 that conforms in the shape of a lip 32, in which the outer periphery 36 is dimensioned to be received narrowly, substantially in a line-by-line manner inside the lip 32, as shown in Figure 3 An internal periphery 38 of the body 34 is also shaped to conform or substantially conform to an internal perimeter 40 of the flat surface 30 so that after assembly, the internal perimeter 38, with the exception of the fingers 16 itself, is level or substantially flush with the inner perimeter 40 of the receptacles 12. The fingers 16, shown as three for each receptacle 12, for example, are spaced equidistant from each other and extend radially inward from the inner perimeter 38 for engagement with a cup disposed in the respective receptacle 12. It should be recognized that more or less fingers 16 could be formed to extend radially inward in each receptacle, 12. inte, the fingers 16 extend to the receptacles 12, while the remaining portion or substantially the remaining portion of the body 34 is on the flat surface 30 of the outer wall 14. The light source 20, as shown in Figures 1-3 , for example, includes a light tube 42 and a light emitter 44, for example, and LED.
The light tube 42 is configured having a shape generally of figure 8 or glasses to conform and lean against the portion of the body 34 that rests on the flat surface 30. Therefore, the tube light 42 overlaps the body 34, as shown in Figure 3, and has an outer periphery 46 aligned or substantially flush with the outer periphery 36 of the body 34 and an inner periphery 48 which is adjusted backwards radially outwardly with the inner perimeter 40 of the receptacles 12. In addition, the light tube 42 has an arm, also referred to as extension 50, diverging outwardly from the spectacle-shaped portion at a junction usually T-shaped or Y-shaped 51. Extension 50 ends at a connector shown generally at 52 which is configured to fix operable light transmission to the light emitter 44. The set 10 also includes an opaque cap 54. The cap 54 is generally shaped like a figure 8 or glasses to conform and overlap the light tube 42. Like me As best shown in Figure 3, the lid has an upper wall 56 with a pair of side walls, including an inner side wall 58 and an outer side wall 60, depending on it.
To facilitate the positioning of the lid 54 on the light tube 42, the outer side wall 60 has notches 62 located to receive the junction 51 on it, and thus the extension 50 of the light tube 42 is able to extend outwards from cover 54 without causing obstruction or interference between light tube 50 and cover 54. As shown in Figures 2 and 3, during the assembly of cover 54 on light tube 42, light tube 42 is completely hidden , and thus the light passing through the light tube 42 is unobservable to an observer. The side walls 58, 60 of the lid 54 are configured to fit over the inner periphery 48 of the light tube 42 and along the outer periphery of the lip of the receptacle 32, respectively, such that the inner sidewall 58 comes into contact with an upper surface 64 of the body 34 interconnecting the fingers 16. Therefore, all that is seen by the observer is the opaque outer surface of the lid 54, and the fingers 16 that extend radially into the interior of the side wall 58. As such, in use, the light transmitted from the light emitter 44 travels completely along the light tube 42 in an undetected manner, such that the light traveling through the light tube 42 remains unobservable to the observer. After traveling through the light tube 42, the light is directed towards the fingers 16, where the light is able to strike out from the fingers 16 evenly or illuminated substantially uniformly in all directions. As such, the light emitted from the fingers 16 evenly or substantially uniformly illuminates the entire inner portion of the receptacles 12, while also shining upward for observance by the observer, as shown in Figure 3. Thus, in addition to the flexible fingers , resilient 16 exerting a holding function to hold the cup against accidental movement within the receptacles 12, the fingers 16 function to illuminate the receptacles 12 for observance by the observer. In Figure 3A, a portion of a cup holder assembly 110 constructed in accordance with another aspect of the invention is shown, where the same reference numbers, as used above, are offset by a factor 100, and are used to identify characteristics similar. Set 110 is similarly constructed with respect to set 10, and thus, only the most noticeable differences are discussed below. Assembly 110 has a cup receptacle 112 with an upper end 124 constructed, the same generally as discussed with respect to upper end 24. In addition, the assembly has fingers 116 interconnected to each other as a single, monolithic body 134 of material resilient, light transmissive, flexible, transparent. The body 134 has an outer periphery 136 that substantially conforms or conforms to a lip 132 of the upper end of the receptacle 124, however, unlike the previous embodiment, the outer periphery 136 is not dimensioned to be received narrowly , substantially line-by-line in the interior of lip 132, but is instead scaled for a radially spaced gap fit with lip 132 to provide uniform or substantially uniform space and annular shape 66 with a pre-width determined that extends between the lip 132 and the outer periphery
136. Otherwise, body 134 is substantially the same as discussed with respect to body 34. As with the previous set 10, set 110 includes a light source 120 having a light tube 142 and a light emitter (not shown). The light tube 142 has a width that extends between an inner periphery 148 and an outer periphery 146 and which is configured for reception in aperture 66 to occupy or substantially occupy the entire width of aperture 66. Therefore, the light tube 142 , instead of covering the body 134, as in the previous embodiment, is in the same plane or substantially in the same plane with the body 134 and adjacent to the outer periphery 16 of the body 134 and the inner periphery of the lip 132. In addition, the tube 142 of light is shown to have a thickness generally the same as that of body 134, and thus has an upper surface 68 which is generally aligned in the same plane with an upper surface 164 of body 134. Assembly 110 further includes an opaque cover 154. The cover 154, like the front cover 54, has an upper wall 156 with a pair of side walls, including an inner side wall 158 and an outer side wall 160. However, unlike previously discussed cover 54, a the recessed annular groove or pocket extends between the side walls 158, 160 which is dimensioned for receiving close to the lip receptacle 132 at the same time, the internal side wall 158 having a width that is the same or substantially the same with a flat surface 130 of the receptacle 112. As such, the positioning of the cap 154 on the receptacle 112, the inner side wall 158 has a lower surface 70 that confronts and overlaps a portion of the body 134 and also the upper surface 68 of the light tube 142. Otherwise, set 110 is generally the same, as discussed with respect to set 10, and thus, no further discussion is believed to be necessary.
In Figures 4 and 5, a portion of a set of cup holders 210 constructed in accordance with another aspect of the invention is shown, where the same reference numbers, as used above, are offset by a factor 200, and are used to identify similar characteristics.
Set 210 is constructed similarly to what was discussed above, in relation to set 10, and thus, only the most noticeable differences are discussed below.
Assembly 210 has a receptacle 212, a light source 242, a cap 254, and fingers 216 provided as a single, monolithic body 234. The constructed body 234 is generally the same, as discussed above, with respect to body 34 , however, an opaque surface 72 is provided on the upper surface 264 of the fingers 216. The opaque surface 72 prevents light from being emitted upwards from the fingers 216 in an outward direction from an upper end 224 cup receptacle 212. The opaque surface 72 can be supplied as a painted surface or as a separate piece of attached material, such as through an adhesive, for example, to the upper surface 264 of the fingers 216, such that the fingers 216 are constructed of a first light transmissive material and the upper opaque surface 72 is constructed of a second opaque material other than the first material. Otherwise, set 210 is generally the same, as discussed in relation to sets 10, 110, and thus, no further discussion is believed to be necessary. In Figures 6 and 7, a portion of a set of cup holders 310 constructed in accordance with another aspect of the invention is shown, where the same reference numbers, as used above, are offset by a factor 300, and are used to identify similar characteristics. Set 310 is constructed similarly to what was discussed above, in relation to set 210, and thus, only the most noticeable differences are discussed below. The set 310 has a receptacle 312, a light source, and here shows a plurality of discrete light sources 342, a cover 354, and the fingers 316 provided as a single, monolithic body 334. The constructed body 334 is generally the same, as discussed above in relation to body 234, however, a plurality of hidden pockets 74 are provided and extending radially to an outer periphery 336 of body 334 for receiving individual light sources 342, such as individually LEDs wires, by way of example and without limitation. As such, in this embodiment, there is no transmissive light separate from the light tube, but instead, the light emits directly from the individual light sources 342 into the transmissive light body 334 of the fingers 316. In addition , receptacles 312 have a vertical lip 332 through individual openings 76 that extend through lip 332 to then receive the light sources
342. The openings 76 are spaced circumferentially over the individual receptacles 312, as desired, in order to position the light sources 342 in their desired location. In order to accommodate any electrical wires 78 connected to the light sources 342, the cover 354 is constructed having an external side wall 360 radially spaced out from the lip 332 to provide an annular slot 80 that extends between the external side wall 360 and lip 332, in which slit 80 is opened in one direction, hanging downwards, to allow wires 78 to extend freely outward from it, as shown in Figure 7. Otherwise, set 310 is generally the same, as discussed in relation to the above sets 10, 110, 210, and thus no further discussion is believed to be necessary. In Figures 8 and 9, a portion of a cup holder set 410 constructed in accordance with another aspect of the invention is shown, where the reference numbers are the same, as used above, are offset by a factor of 400, and are used to identify similar characteristics. Set 410 is constructed similarly to what was discussed above in relation to set 310, and thus, only the most noticeable differences are discussed below.
The set 410 has a receptacle 412, a light source, and here shows a plurality of discrete light sources 442, a lid 454, and the fingers 416 provided as a single, monolithic body 434. The body 434 is the same constructed, as discussed above with respect to body 334, and thus has a plurality of hidden pockets 474 extending radially to an outer periphery 436 of body 434 for receiving individual light sources 442. In addition, receptacles 412 have a vertical lip 432, however, unlike lip 332, which has individual openings 76 that extend through lip 332, lip 432 has recessed individual slits 82 hanging down from them, for receiving light sources 442 from there.
Slots 82 are spaced circumferentially over individual receptacles 412, as desired, to position light sources 442 in their desired position.
Therefore, instead of having to first mount the body assembly 434 to the receptacles 412, and then insert the light sources through an opening for the body pockets 434, the light sources 442 can first be mounted in the hidden pockets 474 of the body 434, and then the subset of the body 434 and the light sources 442 can be mounted to the receptacles 412. This is permitted due to the light sources 442 and the wires of the light sources 442 being able to be arranged for down into the open slits 82, instead of having to be inserted through a circumferentially closed opening.
Otherwise, set 410 is generally the same, as discussed in relation to sets 10, 110, 210, 310 above, and thus no further discussion is believed to be necessary.
Obviously, many modifications and variations of the present invention are possible in light of the above teachings.
It is, therefore, to be understood that, within the scope of the appended claims, the invention may be practiced in another way, than as specifically described.
